Narikala Fortress (Tbilisi)

Overlooking Old Tbilisi and the Mtkvari (Kura) River, Narikala is an ancient fortress established in the 4th century as Shuris-tsikhe (“Invidious Fort”). Expanded over centuries by Umayyad Arabs, David the Builder, and the Mongols (who renamed it Narin Qala, meaning “Little Fortress”), it stands as Tbilisi’s most iconic citadel. Featuring surviving stone walls, historic towers, and the restored Church of St. Nicholas, it remains a dominant landmark of the capital.

Current Status: Temporarily Closed

Reason for Closure: Narikala Fortress is currently closed to the public due to a comprehensive rehabilitation and structural restoration project managed by municipal authorities (Tbilisi City Hall / Tbilisi Development Fund). The works involve critical wall reinforcement, trail safety upgrades, architectural conservation, and infrastructure modernization.
Reopening Date: No exact, official reopening date has been finalized by city authorities yet. Access will resume once safety tests and restoration phases are officially declared complete by municipal updates.
