Overview
- Since January 1, 2026, travel insurance is a legal entry requirement for all tourists entering Georgia.
The New Law: What Changed in 2026
- Before January 1, 2026, travel insurance was recommended but not required. From that date, under Government Regulation No. 602, health and accident insurance became mandatory for all foreign tourists.
- This applies to all nationalities, including GCC citizens. The insurance must be in place before boarding your flight.
What the Law Requires
- Minimum coverage: 30,000 GEL (approximately USD 11,000) for medical treatment and accident expenses
- Policy must cover your entire stay including arrival and departure dates
- Document must be in English or Georgian — Arabic-only is not accepted at the border
- Can be purchased from a Georgian or international insurer
- Both printed and digital (PDF on phone) formats are accepted
Enforcement: How Strict Is It?
- Enforcement began immediately on January 1, 2026. Airlines check at check-in and departure gate. Border officers at Tbilisi and Kutaisi airports inspect the documents.
- ⚠️ Do not assume enforcement is lax. Several travelers have been questioned or delayed.
The Fines
- First violation: 300 GEL (approx. USD 110)
- Unpaid within 30 days: 900 GEL (approx. USD 330)
- Repeated violations: deportation and entry ban
