Big & Small Falls in Dariali Gorge, Kazbegi

Tucked into the Dariali Gorge just outside Stepantsminda, Gveleti Waterfalls are one of the most accessible nature outings in the Kazbegi region. The site is actually two waterfalls — Big Gveleti and Small Gveleti — reached via a single trail that splits partway in.

How to Get There

Gveleti village, Dariali Gorge, Kazbegi Municipality, Georgia. Drive along the Georgian Military Highway from Stepantsminda toward the Russian border, turn off at Gveleti village, and continue on foot along the trail into the gorge.

Trail Info

Round-trip distance to both waterfalls is generally cited at 3.5–4 km, taking roughly 1–2 hours depending on pace and how far a vehicle can drop hikers off. Elevation on the trail ranges from about 1,507m to 1,698m, with a total ascent of roughly 250–357m depending on route taken.

Difficulty at a Glance

Small Waterfall: Easy — flat, well-marked path.
Big Waterfall: Moderate — narrower sections with loose rocks and boulders requiring some light scrambling near the end.

Big Gveleti Waterfall sits close to the edge of the Devdoraki Glacier.

⚠️ Safety Note — Devdoraki Glacier Area

Do not continue past the waterfalls toward the Devdoraki Glacier. The valley beyond the falls is an active landslide and rockslide zone — not a scenic detour. A major ice-rock avalanche in 2014 killed nine people and damaged the Georgian Military Highway, and the area has experienced repeat landslides since, including one in 2016 that again damaged the highway. Georgian authorities installed a monitoring system in the valley specifically because the risk of further collapse remains. This is not a route to attempt independently, regardless of what a miner’s road or old trail markers might suggest. Visitors should turn back after the two waterfalls.

Best Time to Visit

May to October, when the trail is clear of snow and ice and the waterfalls run fullest from mountain snowmelt.

Free — no entrance fee for the trail or the waterfalls.

Good to Know

Wear proper hiking shoes (loose rocks and wet stones along the way); carry water; a light jacket is worth packing in spring/autumn for changing mountain weather. Parking is available near the trailhead off the main road. Often combined with a same-day visit to Gergeti Trinity Church and Dariali Monastery.

شلالات غفيليتي

الشلال الكبير والصغير في وادي داريالي، قازبيغي

تقع شلالات غفيليتي في وادي داريالي على مقربة من ستيبانتسميندا، وهي من أسهل الوجهات الطبيعية التي يمكن زيارتها في منطقة قازبيغي. الموقع يضم في الواقع شلالين — غفيليتي الكبير وغفيليتي الصغير — يُصل إليهما عبر مسار واحد يتفرع في منتصف الطريق.

كيفية الوصول

قرية غفيليتي، وادي داريالي، بلدية قازبيغي، جورجيا. يمكن الوصول بالسيارة عبر الطريق العسكري الجورجي من ستيبانتسميندا باتجاه الحدود الروسية، ثم الانعطاف عند قرية غفيليتي ومتابعة السير على الأقدام على المسار داخل الوادي.

⚠️ ملاحظة أمان – منطقة نهر ديفدوراكي الجليدي

لا تُكمل السير بعد الشلالات باتجاه نهر ديفدوراكي الجليدي. الوادي الواقع خلف الشلالات هو منطقة نشطة للانهيارات الأرضية والصخرية – وليست مسارًا سياحيًا آمنًا. وقع انهيار جليدي-صخري كبير عام 2014 أودى بحياة تسعة أشخاص وألحق أضرارًا بالطريق العسكري الجورجي، وشهدت المنطقة انهيارات متكررة منذ ذلك الحين، منها انهيار عام 2016 الذي ألحق أضرارًا بالطريق مجددًا. قامت السلطات الجورجية بتركيب نظام مراقبة في الوادي تحديدًا بسبب استمرار خطر حدوث انهيارات جديدة. هذا المسار غير مناسب للاستكشاف الفردي مهما بدت علامات الطريق القديم أو طريق التعدين مغرية. يُنصح الزوار بالعودة بعد زيارة الشلالين.

أفضل وقت للزيارة

من مايو إلى أكتوبر، حين يكون المسار خاليًا من الثلج والجليد وتكون الشلالات في أقوى تدفقها بفعل ذوبان الثلوج الجبلية.

نصائح مفيدة

ارتدِ أحذية مشي مناسبة (بسبب الصخور المتناثرة والحجارة المبللة)؛ احمل الماء معك؛ يُنصح بسترة خفيفة في الربيع والخريف بسبب تقلب الطقس الجبلي. تتوفر مواقف سيارات بالقرب من بداية المسار على الطريق الرئيسي. غالبًا ما تُدمج الزيارة مع زيارة كنيسة غيرغيتي للثالوث المقدس ودير داريالي في نفس اليوم.
