1. International Driving Permit (IDP)
All Arab country licenses are in Arabic script. Georgian law requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) for any non-Latin script license. No exceptions. Every rental company will ask for it.
The IDP cannot be obtained inside Georgia. Apply through your country’s traffic authority or automobile club before you travel. Bring it alongside your original license — one without the other is useless.

3. Rules of the Road
- Speed limits: 50 km/h in cities, 80 km/h rural, 110–120 km/h on highways. Speed cameras are active.
- Alcohol: Effectively zero tolerance.
- Seatbelts: Mandatory for all passengers.
- Phone: Hands-free only. Fines on the spot.
- Police: Do not offer bribes. Stay calm and present documents.
- Unpaid fines: Multiply 8–10x if left unpaid. Can cause issues on re-entry.
4. Tbilisi to Batumi – The Main Drive
Around 370 km, 4.5 to 5 hours via E60 East-West Highway. Fuel stations every 30–50 km. Best stop: SOCAR Urbnisi complex or Kutaisi.
Fill up before Rikoti Pass and download offline maps.
5. Mountain Roads
Passes like Goderdzi and Svaneti routes close from November to May. Always check conditions and fuel up before mountain sections.
